Wash our hands

After trying to use the potty I told Max, "Let's give you hands a wash." He turns and goes to stick his hands in the toilet bowl to "wash" them. What on earth? I yelled something along he lines of "No Max, not in the potty, at the sink." Max just looked at me with a bit of a bewildered look, as if he was confused why the toilet wasn't a good place to wash our hands? Has he seen anyone else do this before?
