Return to school

The other big news over the past couple weeks has been returning to school for two days a week. I was conflicted mostly by fear about what the right choice was. But honestly, having them back in school with peers in real life teachers has been a wonderful progression of where we were over the past year. Kids need to be around their peers. I see the impact of them being home with us so much. The good news is they love each other and can make good fun with each other. I think Max and Clair have gotten especially close.

Claire was excited to return to school. Max said he didn’t wanna go back. Eli convinced us that she should stay home at first.

On the first day when I went up to pick them up from school when it was over both Max and Claire came bouncing out of school saying they had had the best day. Max really enjoyed it so much more than he had expected. I was happy for both of them. Max seems to be making friends with everybody in this class. Clair seems to be suffering from being at home and not around classmates for a year. I think it’s a little bit harder for her. She does love being in school with her teacher. And a great day is when she comes home and tells me they didn’t use their computers all day! Second graders should not spend time on computers, especially all day. I think this has been one of the worst things about the pandemic. Young children need to touch things like books and paper.

We eventually had Ellie return to school about a month after Max and Clair. She didn’t like it, but I know it was the right thing to do for her. I hope that she sees the opportunity that’s in front of her to make new friends or to make people that were acquaintances closer friends.
