Spring sports are here

Well, mid March brings the start of spring sports. Things are a little different this spring. We weren’t able to get our typical LRC softball team together for Ellie‘s age, so we’re playing over in Urbana which is very different for us. I’m glad that we were able to work it out to have a team, and I really enjoy the new team and the new parents that are helping out. But it is very different. I miss our wonderful field and it’s not quite the same as coaching on the field that I played softball when I grew up.

The others twist the season brought us is David and I ended up volunteering to coach Max is rec soccer team. They didn’t have a lot of luck getting a parent to step up and coach. Needless to say David and I are not the most qualified, but we were willing. So six days a week, I’m coaching.

Clair is playing soccer. Mostly, David will be taking care of her soccer because it conflicts with softball. I haven’t yet seen her play but I heard her second practice was better than her first. I just hope she enjoys her self.

Snow Tubing

We did manage to have a small family adventure this quarter. We went up to ski liberty and snow tube on Saturday evening. We really enjoyed it. It was especially relaxing being there when it was running at lower capacity. There were hardly any lines and we got to go up and down the mountain over a dozen times during your two hour period.

Eli and Max were fearless. They wanted to be pushed hard and raced and spun. Where enjoyed it without fear but without crazy. David and I both enjoyed it as well. It was a perfect evening out towards the end of winter. That week before had been quite warm and we were lucky if they still had snow on the mountain.

Return to school

The other big news over the past couple weeks has been returning to school for two days a week. I was conflicted mostly by fear about what the right choice was. But honestly, having them back in school with peers in real life teachers has been a wonderful progression of where we were over the past year. Kids need to be around their peers. I see the impact of them being home with us so much. The good news is they love each other and can make good fun with each other. I think Max and Clair have gotten especially close.

Claire was excited to return to school. Max said he didn’t wanna go back. Eli convinced us that she should stay home at first.

On the first day when I went up to pick them up from school when it was over both Max and Claire came bouncing out of school saying they had had the best day. Max really enjoyed it so much more than he had expected. I was happy for both of them. Max seems to be making friends with everybody in this class. Clair seems to be suffering from being at home and not around classmates for a year. I think it’s a little bit harder for her. She does love being in school with her teacher. And a great day is when she comes home and tells me they didn’t use their computers all day! Second graders should not spend time on computers, especially all day. I think this has been one of the worst things about the pandemic. Young children need to touch things like books and paper.

The before and after pictures show at all. Look at those smiles.

We eventually had Ellie return to school about a month after Max and Clair. She didn’t like it, but I know it was the right thing to do for her. I hope that she sees the opportunity that’s in front of her to make new friends or to make people that were acquaintances closer friends.

Time does fly

I can’t believe the first three months of the year have gone by without me writing any stories down. I’m always a little disappointed in myself when I allow this much time to pass without recording the fun stories.

This winter has been relatively calm. With Covid still heavily upon us, we didn’t do much or see many people. We did manage to make some fun for ourselves though. We Enrolled the kids in ice-skating class. It was originally McCanna‘s mom‘s idea as an opportunity for Ellie and McKenna to spend some time together. And we decided to let Clair and Max do it too. I had always had this fascination of being able to take the three kids ice-skating. When Ellie was younger I manage the teacher. I took Max one time before my back got really bad and we never went again. I have never taken Claire. I decided if we had any hope of skating together they would need a class. We thought it was a great opportunity for them to use this fairly isolated winter have have something to look forward to and something to grow with.

Eli did great and progressed throughout the season quite well. She really enjoyed the time with her friend and really seems to enjoy skating to.

Max and Claire both got off to a rough start. I think part of it was the skates I had bought them. Once we switch them to the skates that you could borrow from the place, they progressively got better. Max is fearless and wants to go fast and stop fast. Clair is delicate and purposeful. We went skating as a family twice. I even have a pair of skates and enjoyed getting to get on the ice with the kids twice.

They say they want to do it again. I told them not for spring the season because this is our busy season between soccer and softball. But maybe in the summertime will let them do it again.

Kissing Max goodnight

Every night before I get in bed to go to sleep I visit each child to tell them good night. Eli and Max are more easily disturbed in their sleep and clear. I first visit Eli and turn out her lights and turn off her music if it’s on. Then I give her a kiss on her head with my fingers and tell her good night my darling. She usually stays asleep.

Then I go in the Max‘s room and I try not to make any sound at all because he is so easily moved in his sleep. If he hears anything he will sit up and tell me something. It’s as if he’s awake, but the things he says are comical and usually nonsensical. for example tonight when I went in he opened his eyes straight away looked at me and said it’s up it’s up as he sits up and acts like he’s getting out of bed. I kiss him on the head and tell him good night sweet boy. I suggest that he lay down and go to sleep. I tell him I love him and to lay down again and he lays back down. I walk out of the room and say good night.

I laugh on my way to Clair‘s room. I open the door and I hear her snoring. On the side of her head and tell her good night. She’s sort of sighs as I kiss her,  and stays asleep happily. And then I crawl into my bed, usually quite exhausted. Right now, thanks to all the time I’ve had off work, I’m not exhausted and I’m able to just reflect on the gift of being able to kiss my kids good night each night. They are so peaceful when they’re sleeping.

Starting off 2021

On January 1 we lazed around the house, all day. The boys watched movies. The girls made cake pops. We played a board game or two. It rained and we just stayed inside and didn’t do much of anything productive.

We decided on January 2, because it was much warmer and sunny, we were going to go outside and go for a hike. The place we hired up to go was so busy we couldn’t even get into the park. So, we rerouted and checked out some of the local battlefield in Frederick County. Clair,  David and myself enjoyed the walks, the time outside, and the adventure. Clair was most excited for an adventure. She had been asking for an adventure for a month. And adventure means a hike where you take food and drink and eat along the way and see cool things. She was really sad when the first park was full and we couldn’t get out. She did make the most of the experiences around me battlefields. She enjoyed the walk by the Monacacy River. She enjoyed being outside. She enjoyed talking to mommy and daddy. She enjoyed trying to climb the tree. Max and Ellie dealt with it. But when we got him expressed how thankful they were to be home again. I do worry this pandemic is making them way too comfortable being home all the time. We really need to work on that.

I’m really glad we got outside. It’s healthy and it’s energizing and it’s just the right thing to do not to be in the house all the time. Watched watched a movie about the science of happiness earlier this week. One of the things it’s clear is that it requires doing energizing and new things. I fear we’re not teaching Ellie this as much as she needs to learn it. We’re working on that. The kids will start ice-skating lesson soon. This is a bit risky for me during this time but I know that they need to be doing some thing. I hope this new adventure helps remind them there’s a big world out there waiting for them to explore.
