We were out for a walk tonight. Ellie is trying to prove her independence these days and likes to do her own things. We were trying to head home from the playground when I passed a white butterfly (or possibly moth). Ellie saw it too and decided she was going to try to catch it. I'm not sure what approach she took, but I hear her screaming "Mommy, I caught the butterfly!" She was so proud.
I asked, is it still alive?
Ellie's response, "Yes, it can still crawl, look." she says hopefully.
That little moth was smushed dead and she had white powder all over her hands. She was proud of her catch and a little upset it wasn't alive anymore. We tried to explain to her that catching things isn't always a good idea and that bugs are pretty fragile. I'm not sure how this message resinated, but we tried.
